What to Do After a Car Accident in Montana
A Step-by-Step Guide from a Local Towing Expert | Speed's Towing
Accidents are stressful, and scary. At Speed’s towing, we hope to make an already stressful situation, as seamless as possible. Follow our step by step accident guide to make sure you, your passengers, and others on the road, can stay safe.
1. Stay Safe at the Scene
Safety first — If you are able, pull over, turn on hazards, check for injuries, and make sure you are not currently in danger. If there are any injuries, make sure to call 911 as soon as possible, and don’t try to move them. If your car is still drivable, get it off the road, and if another vehicle is involved, check to see the driver and passengers are okay
2. Call 911
Call 911 to report the accident, and let them know if there are any injuries, whether to send paramedics, and the location of the accident, as well as your location depending on if you’ve moved your car. Make sure to include any information that might be important such as smoke coming from a vehicle, how many cars are involved, or if you were able to get your car out of the road.
3. Exchange info & take pictures
Police reports will contain information and pictures of the crash, but if it is safe to do so, gather images from multiple angles of any vehicle involved to show exactly where any impact occurred. These images can help your claims representative determine who’s at fault in the accident. If there are any third-party witnesses, ask for their account of what happened, and for their contact information.
Exchange information with the other driver(s) involved such as; name, address, phone number, and insurance information. If possible, try to get the year make, and model of the other car(s) as well, along with the license plate, and driver’s license number.

Whether you choose to file a claim with your own insurance or the other driver’s company, the decision is yours. In many cases, you can still file a car insurance claim even if a police report wasn’t filed.
To start the process, your insurance company will typically need basic details about the accident — such as the location, time, and photos of the vehicle damage. Once your claim is submitted, a dedicated claims representative will guide you through the next step.
